The full story

Newmar history

Newmar began in 1968 in Nappanee, Indiana. Marvin Miller and Marvin Newcomer left jobs at another RV maker to start it. Newmar says the founders found meaning in the Mennonite and Amish values common in Nappanee, such as community, serving others and hard work. Its first product was the 1971 Kountry Aire fifth-wheel trailer, and Newmar says this made it one of the first and largest fifth-wheel builders.

In 1984 Mahlon Miller gave up his job as president of Holiday Rambler and bought 51 percent of Newmar. During the 1980s the company moved into Class A motorhomes. Newmar says it introduced the Dutch Star and Mountain Aire in 1990. A 116,000-square-foot plant opened in Nappanee in 1995, and in 1996 Mahlon Miller bought the remaining 49 percent of the company.

Newmar claims several firsts from these years. It says that in 1996 it brought out the first powered, flush-door slideouts in a Class A coach, and that for three years it was the only Class A builder offering slideouts. In the late 1990s it began offering full-body paint on both its trailers and its motorhomes and added a 45,000-square-foot paint building. A 150,000-square-foot, air-conditioned building for chassis preparation and welding followed in 2004. Newmar says it built the first coach with a full-wall slide in 2008.

Mahlon Miller's son, Matt Miller, was named president in 2006. In 2012 Newmar stopped building fifth wheels so it could build only Class A motorhomes. In 2016 it added passive-steer tag axles to all of its tag-axle coaches.

Winnebago Industries announced a deal to buy Newmar in September 2019 and completed it on November 8, 2019. Winnebago paid $270 million in cash plus two million shares of its own stock. News reports put the total at about $344 million and said Newmar's manufacturing would stay in Nappanee. About four months after the sale closed, COVID-19 forced Newmar and Winnebago to stop production for five weeks.

Newmar's history page gives 2020 as the year it entered the Super C market with the Super Star and Supreme Aire. In 2025 it launched two more Super C coaches, the Grand Star and Summit Aire, and the Freedom Aire, which Newmar calls its first entry in the compact Class C segment. Brochures for all three first appear in Newmar's archive for the 2026 model year.

For the 2027 model year Newmar lists 16 motorhome lines. Starting prices on its website run from $250,320 for the Bay Star Sport to the King Aire, which is listed at $1,754,560 on Newmar's lineup page and $1,765,680 on its King Aire page. Newmar's history page says, under 2019, that Casey Tubman was named president to lead Newmar, but it gives no date. A June 2021 trade-press article still called Matt Miller Newmar's president. No source read says who leads the company today.
