Beaver Monterey

The Monterey arrived in the summer of 1995 as the first all-new Beaver after SMC bought the brand. It was the lower-priced Beaver, with a chassis and floor plans similar to the Safari Sahara; SMC's report for 1996 priced it at $135,000 to $160,000. Prices rose over time. A buyer's guide lists ten 2006 floorplans from $243,000 to $263,849; the four specification pages checked show a Roadmaster M-Series chassis and a 350-horsepower Caterpillar C9 engine.

The story of the model

Monterey history

SMC introduced the Monterey in the summer of 1995 as the first all-new Beaver since it bought the brand. It gave Beaver a lower-priced coach, with a chassis and floor plans similar to SMC's Safari Sahara, and SMC's Magnum subsidiary built the chassis. Monterey sales rose to 324 coaches in 1996. SMC's price range grew from $135,000 to $160,000 (report for 1996) to $180,000 to $223,000 (report for 2000). SMC's report for 1999 says an air-ride option had been developed.

Monaco's annual reports list the Monterey at $185,000 to $200,000 (filed March 2002), $210,000 to $230,000 (2003), $220,000 to $250,000 (2004) and $240,000 to $260,000 (2005). A buyer's guide lists ten 2006 floorplans, 34 to 40 feet by name. The four specification pages checked show a Roadmaster M-Series chassis and a 350-horsepower Caterpillar C9 engine. The club's library lists Monterey brochures through 2009.

Early Montereys cost less than this encyclopedia's usual $200,000 floor. They are kept here because the line crossed that mark in the Monaco years.
